CHORINSKYKLAUSE (Dam & Waterfall)
Bad Goisern

Here the waters of the Weißenbach River thunder through a decaying historical dam, dating from 1819, into a stunning green pool before cascading down in a multi-waterfall performance! Well-worth visiting indeed, either by car (the road does become unpaved) up route 890, or on a serious walk (just over 2.5 hours from the apartment). On five or six occasions through the summer the doors are closed for a few hours allowing the water to collect upstream. There then follows an amazing demonstration of the old logging method of using the amount of water to get the felled trees through the dam and down the river. There is a small charge for this, where the Salzkammergut card can be used, but at other times a visit is free.

GIANT ICE CAVES
Obertraun

The ice landscapes within the Dachstein are among the largest natural wonders in the Alps. Over 150,000 people walk through the subterranean cave yearly. Massive cave glaciers, ice mountains, the King Arthur, Percival and Tristan Domes and ice chapels are a contrast to the world outside on a hot summer's day.

The Giant Ice Cave contains 30,000 m² of ice, many parts of which, including the Tristan Dome, are over 25 metres thick. The reason for the ice formation is the special way in which the air circulates:, in winter into the cave and in summer out of the cave. In addition there is an ideal flow of seepage in the spring when the snow melts. As a result of this combination of factors the ice in the cave was formed.

The Giant Ice Cave can be reached in 15 minutes on foot from the middle station of the Krippenstein/Dachstein Cable Car at Obertraun.
Although you may warm yourself up nicely getting to the cave, you will need warm clothing once you are inside. A visit to the cave takes approx. 1.5 hours including walk to and from the cave.

Following the river Traun further from Obertraun there are more caves at Koppenbrüller

Navigation on Lake Hallstatt has been in existence since 1862, and the ferry from Hallstatt-Markt (the town) to the railway station since 1881. The line from Hallstatt-Markt to the railway station is still the only shipping line that navigates on an Austrian lake in winter. The owners have been the Hemetsberger family since the autumn of 1967. Next lake

Today it houses an on-mountain restaurant with a fine sun terrace, from where there are uninterrupted panoramic views of the glorious surrounding mountain scenery.

Then it’s time to explore the bizarre underground worlds of salt at Hallstatt’s outstanding Salt Mine. Amazingly 70% of the entire mountain is salt - have a lick of the walls and find out! Travelling through time your guide will take you to the mysterious salt lake down two smoothly polished miners' slides (the second one is the longest). Here, deep in the mine, over the water you can learn about prehistoric salt mining with a well presented audio and visual laser show.

Among the Salt World’s most striking and noticeable attractions is an incredible find: in 1734 the fully preserved body of a prehistoric miner was found in the mine, known today as the "Man in Salt". The find was described as "flat as a pancake and grown as one with the mountain". Next cave

WALKS & HIKING
from Bad Goisern

Walk the oldest part of the Salzkammergut in the Hallstatt Dachstein World Heritage region. Here, under the gaze of the Dachstein mountain, you can discover treasures of a 2,500 year-old culture, influenced by the "white gold" - better known as salt if you hadn't already gathered.

Of course there are trails into the woods and mountains in every direction from the time you step out of the apartment complex, but here are some worth mentioning:

1. A mild walk from Edelweiss takes you to Hallstätter See (Lake Hallstatt). From here you can carry on along the historical Salzkammergut Soleweg Trail (Soleleitungsweg) to Hallstatt town.

2. Walk from Bad Goisern to Altaussee, approx. 6.5 hours. Hiking along the Steinwandlgragen and the Leislingwand you will have wonderful views to the Dachsteinmassiv. Arriving in Lupitsch you have reached the Ausseerland and it's just a short walk down to the town of Altaussee.

3. Starting at Altausee the story of salt in the picturesque Ausseerland is shown at 23 stations on a pleasant hiking tour. The signposting helps you discover old tunnel entrances, roman trade routes, old fortress ruins and stories from the salt production and mining traditions. The salt mine Altaussee is worth a visit.

Signpost4. The Ewige Wand is a path built in a rock that takes you from Bad Goisern to Bad Ischl. On the way through the Predigstuh and Salzberg of Bad Ischl you'll wander the alpine pasture Hoisenradalm which leads you to a beautiful path through to the former emperors hunting grounds.

5. Just near the apartment complex are trails that will lead up into the mountains to the Goiserer Hütte - a fine place for eating and drinking and mountain watching Turn right on to the Karl Pilz Runwanderweg and follow the signs.

6. Turn left along the Karl Pilz Rundwanderweg, instead of right as you did in number 5, and the trail can take you to an early 19th century stone dam and waterfalls known as the Chorinskyklause.

Austria trekking locations (in German) with mountain huts and web cams here (Dachstein area includes Bad Goisern)

LEFT: The sign just down from the apartment complex. This is the path that meanders its way through the woods and the one to take if you wish to walk to Bad Goisern.
